Summer blues

Another strange week has passed here in the UK, with a terrible fire in a London tower block and the ensuing grief and anger. With all the ups and downs of life, I struggle sometimes to be creative but find thar turning to a simple project helps me focus.

These culottes, from Love Sewing Magazine issue 40, were perfect. I don’t have many summer trousers and our weather has suddenly warmed up. I already had the fabric (from Fabworks in Dewsbury)  and so could get started quickly. After some tricky pattern matching in recent makes, using plain fabric was a pleasant change!

I modified the pattern slightly and opted for a single side pocket on the right hand side and an invisible zip in the left side seam. I cut out view D in size 12 but used slightly reduced seam allowances which has resulted in a fit that I’m really happy with.

A tip for easy invisible zip insertion: use a special roller foot that flattens out the coils,  combined with Wonder Clips rather than pins to hold it in place.

The resulting clothes are light, comfortable and easy to wear. Watch this space for future variations!
